The British Virgin Islands rolled out a comprehensive National Security Strategy on Tuesday, 27 October, charting a fresh course for how the Territory will handle security and justice challenges.
The plan identifies security threats to the islands, maps internal obstacles that hamper government response, sets out priority actions, and creates a Security and Justice Transformation Programme to oversee and deliver those actions. Through this coordinated reform effort, the Territory aims to strengthen crime-fighting capacity, safeguard residents, control borders and boost readiness for emergencies and natural disasters.
Governor Daniel Pruce and Premier Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley jointly opened the launch, drawing security and justice officials from law enforcement, criminal justice and government bodies. The Right Honourable Lord Hanson of Flint, Minister of State at the United Kingdom's Home Office, attended and signalled UK backing for the initiative.
Governor Pruce framed the strategy as offering "a clear vision for a safe, secure and resilient Virgin Islands" and stressed that "the focus now must be on delivery." He pledged to partner with the Premier and other sector leaders to improve coordination and drive implementation.
Premier Wheatley underscored that security demands shared effort across society. "Our people deserve to feel safe in their homes, our children deserve to grow up free from violence and exploitation, and our businesses and visitors must have confidence in the security of our Territory," he said.
Lord Hanson said the UK and Virgin Islands Government hold "a deep commitment to keeping communities safe" and that Britain stands ready to back the strategy's rollout.
