The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is inviting livestock producers and animal handlers across the British Virgin Islands to a full-day training session on parasite management scheduled for Thursday, October 29.

Held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Learning Resource Centre at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, the workshop will blend classroom instruction with practical stations where participants can apply what they learn. Topics include recognising parasites in animals, determining when treatment is necessary, properly giving dewormers, and documenting all interventions.

The hands-on portion will focus on evaluating animal condition, estimating weight to calculate correct doses, administering medications, and recording both treatments and withdrawal periods. Withdrawal periods are the mandatory waiting times before meat or milk from treated stock can safely reach consumers.

The department emphasises that responsible use of dewormers is essential to combat resistance and prevent parasites from returning. Better parasite control leads to healthier animals, improved welfare, and stronger farm output overall.

This training is part of a broader departmental push to equip livestock producers with education and practical know-how. Interested farmers, handlers, and others can register by contacting the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. The registration deadline is Friday, October 23. For more information, call 468-6123 or email [email protected].
