The British Virgin Islands marked Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a coordinated campaign to strengthen community action against domestic violence and build personal safety skills.
The Office of Gender Affairs partnered with Women in Need (WINBVI) to deliver two free self-defence training sessions at Boynes Taekwondo Academy. Women attended on 3 October and men on 17 October, learning practical techniques to build confidence and awareness of their own protection.
Acting Sergeant Jemron Delplesche of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force spoke at both training events, covering the lawful use of self-defence tools and the legal framework around personal protection.
The campaign also included a Radio Almanac series broadcast on ZBVI Radio, produced jointly by the Office of Gender Affairs and WINBVI. The programmes aimed to share information, foster public discussion and underscore the need to recognise and tackle domestic violence.
On Friday, 30 October, a community march brought residents together to show solidarity and reaffirm their commitment to ending domestic violence.
The Office of Gender Affairs stressed that sustained effort is needed beyond a single month of awareness. The office called for ongoing community participation, available support services, public education and a shared commitment to building relationships and spaces where people feel secure and valued.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development thanked WINBVI, the Family Support Network, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, the Social Development Department and all who participated in and supported the month's activities.
