BVI DELEGATION RETURNS FROM LONDON WITH LITTLE TO SHOW THE PUBLIC

After constitutional talks in the UK, the Government has revealed almost nothing about what was proposed, rejected or remains under negotiation.

A British Virgin Islands delegation has come back from London after meeting with UK officials to explore changes to the Territory's constitution, but residents have received virtually no explanation of what took place during those talks.

GuavaBerry Media has raised alarm over the lack of disclosure, noting that the public knows some proposals have been ruled out but has no sense of which ones, why they were rejected, or what the delegation actually put forward in the first place.

The outlet emphasises that constitutional matters are fundamentally different from routine government business. The Constitution belongs to the people, not to politicians or bureaucrats, and it sets out the relationship between the BVI and the United Kingdom as well as how the Territory's institutions function.

Without knowing what negotiators discussed, residents cannot properly judge whether their elected representatives have pursued the Territory's interests effectively. GuavaBerry Media argues that meaningful public involvement requires people to understand the issues being debated while negotiations are still happening, not after decisions have already been locked in.

The outlet distinguishes between keeping sensitive negotiating tactics confidential and offering the public almost no substantive information. It suggests the Government could explain which broad topics were raised, what positions the BVI advanced, where agreement was found, where disagreement exists, what matters remain unresolved, and which proposals the UK has said cannot move forward, without undermining the integrity of ongoing talks.

A particular concern is that constitutional reform could end up being settled between governments alone, with the public brought in only after the crucial decisions have been made. GuavaBerry Media notes that young people not yet eligible to vote will inherit whatever constitutional arrangement emerges and will live with the consequences of choices being made today long after current political leaders have moved on.

The outlet is calling for a formal accounting of the London discussions: what was tabled, what was removed, who objected and why, what still remains in play, what the BVI hopes to achieve next, and when residents will have a genuine chance to weigh in before the next round of negotiations begins.
