The Bahamas Meteorological Department issued a severe weather warning early Friday for New Providence and surrounding waters, alerting residents and boaters to prepare for potentially dangerous conditions.

Thunderstorms moving through the region could bring heavy rainfall, flooding, dangerous lightning and hail, the department said. The warning also flagged the possibility of waterspouts or tornadoes developing in affected areas.

The alert was issued at around 3:40 a.m. EDT on October 23 and was expected to remain in effect until 5:50 a.m. The warning covered North Andros and nearby waters and cays, with a broader weather watch extending to the Northwest and Central Bahamas.

According to meteorological observations and radar imagery at 3:36 a.m., medium to heavy rainfall with embedded thunderstorms were moving through the warning and watch regions. The department linked the weather pattern to atmospheric low-pressure conditions and tropical moisture across the region.

The storms could intensify from strong to severe, bringing strong gusty winds, heavy downpours and visibility problems for residents and motorists. Marine operators face heightened risk, and boat operators in the watch areas were urged to seek safe harbour. Small boat operators were warned that conditions would be particularly threatening.
