West St George Secondary School in Belair marked 22 years of operation on Wednesday, September 16, with a thanksgiving service that drew past and present students, former principals, teachers and education officials.
The school opened its doors on September 16, 2004. The anniversary event, held under the theme "Our Past Our Present Our Legacy", featured remarks from three former principals: Alinda Hypolite, Asfo Stephens and Dianne Williams. Current principal Afi Martin reflected on the school's early years, describing how its "misunderstood beginning is transforming it into a beacon of holistic triumph".
Area representative Kashaka Cupid, who serves as Minister of Youth, Culture and Creative Industries, and Minister of Education Phillip Jackson attended the service. Cupid encouraged students to make full use of their learning opportunities and pledged support for the school. Jackson outlined government initiatives including covering CXC sign-up costs for students and reducing SVG Community College fees by up to 50%.
Two alumni delivered key addresses. Troy Archibald, a 2016 graduate, spoke about overcoming failure in the Common Entrance exam and using past setbacks as a foundation for future success. E. Allison Davis, the 2017 valedictorian, urged current students not to let negative public perceptions of the school limit their ambitions, noting that success depends on personal commitment to learning rather than the school attended.
