The British Virgin Islands is marking Caribbean Statistics Day today with a virtual presentation highlighting the work of the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The CSO will stream the event on its Facebook page, showcasing VI statistics focused on price movements and other data collected across the territory. The presentation will also demonstrate how each unit within the department generates and uses statistical information.

The annual observance, held on October 15, aims to raise awareness of statistics' importance to decision-making, planning and policy development across the Caribbean and globally. This year's theme is "Harmonising Data, Strengthening Resilience".

The CSO's work spans three main areas: Economic Statistics, National Accounts and Government Finance Statistics, and Social Statistics. The department said it wants to educate government officials, the private sector and the public on how statistics inform development and to encourage data providers to cooperate with collection efforts.

According to the CSO, reliable statistics depend on public participation and data sharing. The department also aims to demonstrate the role statistics play in the territory's socio-economic development and to build a culture of data sharing among residents.

Members of the public are invited to watch the presentation on the CSO VI Facebook page.
