The Virgin Islands Board of Elections is staging dual registration events this week as the clock ticks toward the cutoff date for the November general election.
On Tuesday, September 29, between 9:00 and 10:30 a.m., the board will operate a registration station at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School's cafeteria on St. Thomas. Working alongside the school's Social Studies Department, organisers plan to invite 11th- and 12th-grade students to learn about the electoral process and operate the Express Vote and DS 200 voting machines.
The following evening. Wednesday, September 30, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., a second drive will open at the University of the Virgin Islands' Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The Nu Chi Zeta Graduate Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is partnering with the Elections Board for this session, which aims to engage young adults in understanding elections while also allowing them to test the voting equipment.
Anyone registering at either location must bring original identification: a birth certificate, U.S. passport, military discharge document (DD214), or naturalization certificate. The Elections System will not accept photocopies.
To qualify for registration, applicants must hold U.S. citizenship, satisfy the territory's residency rules, and be at least 18 years old, or reach that age before the next election, while meeting all other requirements set by law.
Sunday, October 4 marks the final day to register for the November 3 general election. The online registration system closes earlier, shutting down at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, to give officials time to check and process submissions. Those who miss the online window can still register in person at Elections System offices on both islands: Saturday, October 3 (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) and Sunday, October 4 (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.).
