Medicare beneficiaries across the US Virgin Islands must act by December 7 to enroll in or modify their prescription drug plans, Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach announced this week.

The enrollment period began October 15 and runs through December 7. During these weeks, eligible residents can sign up for Medicare Part D, a program that covers prescription medications through private insurers authorized by Medicare. Each year, participating insurance companies set their own costs and decide which drugs they will cover.

Some residents do not need to join Part D. Those with existing coverage through an employer or union, or those already in the USGVI Medicare Advantage plan, fall into this category. However, signing up for Part D could strip away those other protections.

The Lt. Governor's Office called on all beneficiaries to examine what they currently have, making sure it still fits their situation regarding expense, what drugs are included and how convenient it is to use. People happy with their existing arrangement can skip re-enrollment.

Missing this year's window means waiting until the following year for any changes. The Virgin Islands State Health Insurance Assistance Program (VI SHIP) can help. In the St. Thomas and St. John area, call 340-774-2991, extension 4507 or 4508. St. Croix residents should dial 773-6449, extension 3151. Online appointment booking is also available. Medicare's website at www.medicare.gov and the national helpline 1-800-MEDICARE (633-4227) offer further details.
