JULIEN ALFRED'S GOLD: Saint Lucia still united two years after historic Olympic medals

The sprinter's 2024 Paris triumph brought the nation together like nothing since 1979, now the question is whether that unity can last.

September 27 holds special meaning in Saint Lucia since 2024, when the nation designated it Julien Alfred Day to honour the sprinter who brought home the country's first-ever Olympic medals.

Alfred claimed gold in the 100 metres and silver in the 200 metres at the Paris Games in August 2024. Her homecoming on September 24 drew crowds, with residents gathering to celebrate her achievement. The inaugural Julien Alfred Day was marked as an official public holiday on the Friday following her return, featuring a national concert and widespread festivities.

Two years later, the significance of that moment endures. The celebration brought together Saint Lucians across political and social divides in a way observers noted had not occurred since 1979. Music played a central role in the national mood: a song titled "Damn Proud Lucian" became a rallying cry, while the National Combined Schools Choir performed a tune dedicated to Alfred.

Alfred has since become a Saint Lucia Tourism Ambassador, formally representing the nation on the global stage.

Observers have reflected on what the unity surrounding Alfred's achievement revealed about the country's capacity to set aside differences when united behind a shared cause. The question now, some suggest, is whether Saint Lucians can sustain that spirit beyond the celebration of a single champion.
