A St. Thomas woman has been charged with assault, property destruction and disturbing the peace following a violent clash with her roommate that was recorded on security cameras and mobile phone footage, according to court records.

Desirae Renee Rivera was set to face Magistrate Judge Julie Smith Todman in Superior Court on Monday for an advice-of-rights hearing. The charges against her include assault and battery with circumstances of aggravation, destruction of property, and disturbance of the peace, all stemming from domestic violence allegations.

Police responded to a residence in Estate Bakkero at approximately 3:09 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, after receiving a 911 call. Rivera initially told officers she had been attacked by her roommate, claiming she discovered the woman trying to enter her bedroom and that the roommate subsequently slammed her head into a dresser drawer.

The victim's account, supported by recorded evidence, differed substantially. The two had shared the apartment for roughly nine months, with tensions escalating over time. Late Saturday night, Rivera arrived home with a man her roommate had previously been involved with. When the roommate went outside for a cigarette, Rivera confronted her, accusing her of telling Rivera's boyfriend that Rivera was unfaithful. During this exchange, Rivera struck a water bottle the roommate was holding, causing the woman's lip to split.

To reduce tensions, the roommate left to walk around the neighbourhood while monitoring her bedroom camera remotely on her phone. The footage showed Rivera attempting to open the locked bedroom door. When the roommate returned and began recording on her phone, Rivera was near the door shouting profanities.

The situation intensified in the kitchen, where Rivera removed groceries and other items from the refrigerator and hurled them around the room. After the roommate locked herself in her bedroom, Rivera allegedly rushed the door, struck it repeatedly until the frame gave way, and pushed inside. The door's impact struck the victim's face, leaving visible injury on the left side. Inside the room, Rivera damaged the bed frame and pulled the woman's hair before the roommate fought back.

When police arrived, Rivera displayed slurred speech, glassy eyes and marked agitation. She struggled to form complete sentences and raised her voice repeatedly when questioned. The victim's digital recordings, by contrast, corroborated her efforts to escape and documented Rivera's pursuit and the door being forced open.

Rivera was taken into custody and transported to the Richard N. Callwood Command, where Forensic Detective Vernise Monsanto processed her. Following territorial domestic violence rules, she was held without bail and remanded to the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections pending her court hearing.
