Larry Armony, an 80-year-old from Sandy Point, St. Kitts & Nevis, has died following an accident at Frigate Bay Marina. The historian, educator and cultural practitioner sustained injuries on September 21, received immediate care at the scene, and was then admitted to Joseph N. France General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit, where he passed away in the early morning hours of September 22.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is investigating what happened and offered its sympathies to his family and friends.
Across St. Kitts & Nevis, Armony was known for shaping the islands' educational, historical and artistic landscape. He co-founded the Okolo Drummers, an ensemble that later evolved into the Okolo Tegremantine Arts Theatre, and worked there as a drummer, instructor, spoken word performer and artistic director.
His creative reach extended far beyond drumming. Armony composed, performed and wrote calypso music, taking part in major festivals including Carnival and Culturama. Over three decades, from 1989 to 2021, he released eight full albums, produced additional recordings, and published a collection of his calypso song lyrics.
His artistic practice wove together calypso, West African drumming traditions, poetry and performance, making him a defining voice in the cultural identity of the twin-island nation.
