St. John's main library will throw open its doors on Halloween for a four-hour community party, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources announced Monday.
The Elaine Ione Sprauve Library's October 31 event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., featuring costumed staff, festive dรฉcor, and activities designed for young visitors. Children may attend in costume, and the facility will offer light refreshments, snacks and candy.
"Libraries are important gathering places where our young people can discover books, explore their creativity and develop a lifelong love of learning," DPNR Commissioner Jean-Pierre Oriol said in a statement. "Halloween gives us a wonderful opportunity to make the library's reopening an especially memorable experience for the community."
The reopening comes as the territory's library network remains largely closed. St. Thomas currently has no functioning libraries. On St. Croix, only the Florence Williams Public Library in Christiansted is open, serving patrons Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Turnbull Library on St. Thomas has sat idle for years following roof damage. Though originally scheduled to resume operations in 2024, the facility has faced repeated setbacks. Recent water damage has further delayed its opening, according to DPNR spokesman Jamal Nielsen.
St. Croix's Athalie Petersen Library was expected to complete renovations by spring 2025 but remains closed. Enid Baa Library, shuttered since 2012, is slated to reopen in mid-November, Nielsen said.
The public library system's website, usvipubliclibraries.com, has been offline for several weeks.
