A St. Croix resident faces charges of destruction of property and domestic violence after admitting he deliberately reversed his work truck into his stepbrother's vehicle during a heated confrontation over a deceased father's belongings.
Sycoi C. Jarvis was taken into custody at the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility and held without bail. He appeared before Magistrate Judge Yolan C. Brow Ross on Wednesday morning at Kingshill Superior Court, where he was charged with Major Misdemeanor Destruction of Other's Property, Domestic Violence, and Damaging or Tampering with a Vehicle.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. on October 6 in Estate Whim when police responded to a report of a disturbance at a residential address. According to the police probable cause statement, Jarvis arrived in a work truck intending to remove a storage bin from the property. His stepbrother, David Normil, came outside to prevent the removal, noting that the house and its contents were subject to active probate proceedings and could not be disturbed until a judge settled the estate.
The two men engaged in a verbal dispute. Jarvis told investigators that Normil emerged carrying a machete and stated that taking items would leave him without means, to which Jarvis replied the situation had "nothing to do with me." Jarvis explained to police that he could not attach the storage container because Normil repeatedly interfered with and repositioned the cable on his truck.
After their exchange concluded, Normil turned to re-enter the house. Within seconds, he heard the truck's engine accelerate, then the sound of reverse gears. Jarvis admitted to police that he intentionally put the truck in reverse and drove backward directly into Normil's parked red Nissan Altima. He then made an obscene gesture through the window before leaving the scene.
Police documented crushing damage to the left rear passenger door, door handle and window of the Altima. Jarvis has no prior criminal record. Because the matter involves a domestic family dispute, he was remanded in custody without bail pending his court proceeding.
