A St. Croix man was taken into custody Saturday evening after leading Virgin Islands Police Department officers on a high-speed pursuit that exceeded 100 mph, culminating in a collision with a guardrail on Melvin H. Evans Highway.
Kwane Wilson Jr. told law enforcement he fled a routine traffic stop near Emancipation Road because he lacked a valid driver's license. Officers conducting anti-crime patrols spotted the silver Acura around 7:38 p.m. on October 3 and attempted to stop it for a missing front bumper tag. The vehicle instead accelerated through the White Bay neighborhood, passed the old Arthur A. Richards School, crossed Concordia, and turned onto Melvin H. Evans Highway.
The Acura sped through multiple red traffic lights at speeds exceeding 100 mph before losing traction near Industrial Road and striking the highway's steel guardrail. Officer Jahreem Williams exited his patrol vehicle carrying an AR-15 assault rifle and commanded both occupants to surrender. Wilson and passenger Elijah Blyden were arrested without incident.
Forensic technicians recovered a loaded 9mm ghost gun from the vehicle. The untraceable firearm had been fitted with an auto-sear chip, a modification that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic weapon. The gun contained a 17-round magazine with a live round in the chamber.
Wilson could not afford a $500 bail and was held at the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility at Golden Grove. He appeared before Superior Court Magistrate Judge Yolan C. Brow Ross on Monday, October 5, and faced charges of driving without a license and reckless driving.
