Rescue efforts are underway in Agatash, a small Guyanese village, after a three-year-old boy disappeared into a waterway while in the care of his seven-year-old cousin.
Keron Atkinson, who celebrated his third birthday on September 26, left home with the older child without permission from his guardian. The pair entered the waterway together, and Keron ran into trouble in the deeper section. His cousin attempted to bring him back to shore but lost his grip and had to let go. The older boy then returned home to raise the alarm.
Family members and neighbours began searching immediately, but conditions on the ground are hampering the effort. The location where the children were playing cannot be reached by walking; rescuers must push through thick mud to access it. As of the latest update, the child remains missing.
Agatash sits along the Essequibo River, approximately three miles south of Bartica. The village, home to around 740 people according to the 2012 census, has a primary school and health centre, though residents requiring hospital care must travel to Bartica.
Keron's mother works as a cook in Guyana's Interior region and had left her son with a family member. No official updates on the child's whereabouts have been released, and the search is ongoing.
