Saint Lucia has opened its first dedicated prosthetic centre, offering amputees access to custom-built limbs and a path toward greater independence. The Saint Lucia Prosthetic Centre, which opened on Thursday, is the result of nearly three years of planning and brings together the Rotary Club Caribbean Plus, the Government of Saint Lucia, Hope to Walk, Montero Medical Missions and the Tapion Foundation.

The centre is housed at Tapion Hospital, which provided the space at no cost. Patients will be assessed individually and have prosthetics designed to suit their specific needs. The facility has already helped two people walk independently before its official opening, a former police officer and a double amputee, both of whom left the centre walking on their own.

Rotary Club Caribbean Plus President Tzarmallah Haynes-Joseph, in remarks delivered on her behalf, described the opening as "opening a door to greater mobility, independence and hope." Past Rotary president Konrad Wagner emphasised the centre's commitment to functionality and accessibility, noting that support continues after a prosthetic is fitted, with repairs and adjustments available for all users, regardless of where they originally received their limb.

For now, the centre focuses on below-the-knee prosthetics, with plans to eventually expand to above-the-knee services. Minister for Home Affairs, Crime Prevention and Persons with Disabilities Jeremiah Norbert, himself a prosthetic user since losing a leg in a 2021 motorcycle accident, highlighted the life-changing impact of the facility. He noted that high costs have historically left many amputees without options for years, unable to afford the equipment despite wanting to walk. The centre aims to remove that barrier and give more people the mobility and independence a prosthetic limb provides.
