The Department of Public Works is warning St. Thomas residents to expect significant traffic disruption beginning Monday as construction crews close Raphune Hill during overnight hours.

Work will run nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with contractor Island Roads Corp. handling milling and paving of road sections plus guardrail installation. The project is scheduled to wrap by October 25, weather permitting.

Public Works has mapped out detailed reroutes for traffic flowing in both directions. Drivers heading east on Alton Adams Sr. Drive or Georgia Francis Drive toward Raphune Hill will be directed to make a U-turn on Tortola Hill Road near Wheatley Center. Those same eastbound drivers can alternatively travel south onto Mandela Circle via Rumer Drive, then continue south on Elmo D. Roebuck Sr. Drive and proceed east.

Westbound traffic on Weymouth Rhymer Highway toward Raphune Hill will be sent north onto Donoe Bypass, with southbound traffic on Donoe Bypass restricted to eastbound movement only on Weymouth Rhymer Highway. Westbound drivers are advised to use Donoe Bypass north, then continue west on Valdemar A. Hill Sr. Drive and Maude Proudfoot Drive.

Public Works urged motorists to drive with caution, follow flaggers' directions, and obey all posted signs and barricades. The department warned of potential delays throughout the work zone.
