A fire at the Children and Family Home in Plum Park, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, sent nine minors to hospital on Monday night after they breathed in smoke from the blaze.
The Guyana Fire Service responded to reports of the fire and discovered flames in the female dormitory on the facility's upper level. Firefighting teams from Headquarters in Campbellville and Eccles Fire Station worked to contain the spread and fully extinguish the fire.
All residents were safely removed from the building. The nine children affected by smoke inhalation received emergency medical care at the scene, then were moved to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for additional treatment.
After the flames were put out, crews conducted searches throughout the building to look for any remaining fire and to confirm the structure was secure against the risk of re-ignition. No residents were unaccounted for.
The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation into what caused the fire, but has not yet released details. The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is monitoring developments and said it will share further information as it becomes confirmed. The ministry also called on the public to protect the children's privacy and avoid spreading unverified details or photographs that could identify them.
