Police in Belize are investigating the death of 35-year-old Wilson Perez, a community sports organiser, who was found with multiple chopping wounds in Carmelita Village, Orange Walk District, on October 13.
Perez left his home around 10:30 p.m. on October 12 to head to the village football field, according to police. When he did not return, his family searched for him the next morning and discovered his body. Police arrived at the scene around 7:50 a.m. on October 13.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, confirmed that Perez had sustained multiple chopping wounds. Investigators inspected the scene as part of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Regional media reports indicate that Perez's body was beheaded and that there were attempts to burn it, though police have only verified the chopping wounds and have not confirmed these additional details. His motorcycle was found approximately 100 yards from his body.
Perez's cousin, Mildred Ariaza, said that Perez received a text message around 10:30 p.m. on October 12. The family could not locate his phone afterward, raising questions about who sent the message and why. The possibility that Perez was lured to the location has been raised, though police have not verified that the message was an attempt to draw him there.
Police said the investigation is expected to reveal the identity of the accused, the circumstances surrounding his death, and what occurred between the time he left home and when he was found.
