Slinger Francisco, the calypso artist known worldwide as Mighty Sparrow, has died at age 91. He passed away on September 27 in New York, surrounded by family members, following a short illness, according to his family.
Francisco was born in Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935 and relocated to Trinidad and Tobago during his early childhood. He rose to prominence as one of the Caribbean's most influential calypso performers, earning recognition as the "Calypso King of the World." His breakthrough came with the 1956 release "Jean and Dinah," which launched a musical career that stretched across six decades. Over that period, he released numerous recordings and toured extensively, performing at venues including Madison Square Garden.
Dominica's Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit released a statement honouring Francisco's contribution to Caribbean culture. Skerrit said he joined citizens across Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and the wider Caribbean in marking his death. The Prime Minister characterized Francisco as "one of our greatest storytellers," noting his ability to document Caribbean history, humour and daily life through music delivered with distinctive sharp wit.
"His passing is a tremendous loss to our region, but his legacy will live on in the many artistes he inspired and the remarkable body of work he leaves behind," Skerrit's statement said. He offered condolences to Francisco's family and others affected by the loss.
Regional figures and communities have issued tributes following his death.
