Twenty-two Virgin Islands students will receive a combined $100,000 in scholarships from the MHV BVI Group, distributed through a fund bearing the name of the company's co-founder.
The scholarship programme was announced in April 2026 by MHV BVI Group Chairman Mark Vanterpool, who initially committed $50,000 to the effort. That pledge was subsequently increased to $100,000 to reach a larger number of applicants and broaden the initiative's scope. Recipients will receive their award letters in the coming days, with payments scheduled over a two-year span.
The fund honours Judith E. Vanterpool, who co-founded MHV BVI Group and has spent more than 50 years working in Virgin Islands education. Both she and Mark Vanterpool have teaching experience, and the company framed the scholarship as an expression of its commitment to educational advancement in the Territory.
Judith Vanterpool described the awards as intended to offer recipients something beyond monetary support. "Beyond the financial impact, we want successful applicants to take this investment as a sign that someone believes strongly in what they can achieve," she said. She noted her hope that scholarship winners would eventually settle in the Virgin Islands and participate in its growth.
The company said it has supported student education for two decades and observed many former beneficiaries return to serve their community. MHV BVI Group also operates a summer job training programme for young people.
The group's holdings include OneMart Supermarket, Pusser's, Rhythm & Sands, Rock Cafe, Onde, Cane Garden Bay Beach Hotel, Coconut Breeze Villas, Engel & Vรถlkers BVI and other businesses.
