A man died on Saturday morning after collapsing suddenly inside the Frederiksted Post Office lobby on St. Croix, according to people with knowledge of the incident.
The incident took place shortly after 7 a.m. on October 10. Surveillance footage from the facility reportedly captured the moment the man fell to the floor in the lobby.
The deceased was described as heavyset and was reportedly linked to a vehicle with Florida license plates. He had spent several months in the Virgin Islands, though his identity has not been independently established for publication.
The exact medical cause remains undetermined. Whether the man experienced a heart attack or another form of medical crisis is not yet known.
The U.S. Postal Service has established protocols to handle medical emergencies at postal locations. These include promptly dialling 911, alerting relevant staff members and coordinating emergency medical response. The agency also maintains an internal safety reporting system to document serious incidents involving members of the public at its facilities.
Under Postal Service rules, deaths or injuries of non-postal employees occurring on postal property can be recorded through this reporting mechanism. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which oversees federal law enforcement and security for the postal system, may be called in depending on what the circumstances reveal.
No public statement had been issued by the Postal Service as of Sunday morning.
