Two men have been arrested and charged in the broad-daylight execution of 23-year-old Asani Henry outside the Bethlehem House Shelter on St. Thomas on June 16, sparking widespread community outcry over what residents describe as an inter-island contract killing.
Kadeem Christian "C.D." Durand, 21, traveled from St. Croix to St. Thomas to allegedly carry out the shooting alongside Jah'Sheem Graham, 23. According to court affidavits and police bulletins, the two men conducted a coordinated robbery and fatal shooting near Hospital Ground. Graham fled to Orlando, Florida, where the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended him and extradited him back to the territory on October 10. Both men are now held at the Alexander A. Farrelly Justice Complex on $1,000,000 bail apiece.
The VIPD charged both men with First-Degree Murder, First-Degree Robbery, Brandishing, and weapons violations within 1,000 feet of a public housing complex.
The arrests have unleashed intense community reaction on social media, with residents branding Durand an "imported assassin" and alleging he is responsible for additional unsolved killings across the territory. Commenters used street slang referring to contract killings, suggesting Durand had carried out multiple homicides before the Henry shooting. Others pointed to the calculated nature of the inter-island operation, describing it as resembling a cartel-style hit job.
Public anger has focused heavily on the $1 million bail amount, with residents arguing that murder charges of this severity should carry no bail at all. Several commenters expressed concern that the territory's bail guidelines are outdated and that judicial leniency creates a "revolving door" for violent offenders. Others warned of potential street retaliation if either suspect secured release through property bonds.
The booking photograph of Durand, showing him with dreadlocks, also triggered debate over cultural stereotyping and the perception that young men wearing locks are automatically viewed as criminals by the public.
Community members have called for enhanced surveillance technology and inter-island tracking systems to prevent young gunmen from moving freely across territorial waters. Police Chief Deborah Hodge highlighted the collaboration between detectives, the community, and federal marshals in apprehending Graham in Florida.
Both men remain detained pending their formal Advice of Rights hearings in St. Thomas Superior Court.
