Adaejah Hodge has delivered a historic victory for the British Virgin Islands at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking gold in the women's 200 metres final on Friday, July 31.
The 20-year-old finished the race at Scotstoun Stadium in 22.07 seconds, making her the first woman from the territory to win a Commonwealth Games athletics title. She edged out Trinidad and Tobago's Shaniqua Bascombe in a tight contest, pulling ahead in the final stretch to claim her biggest senior international title.
Hodge had already made her mark the previous day during the semifinals. Running in the second semifinal heat, she stopped the clock at 22.01 seconds with a following wind of 1.7 metres per second, a time that broke the existing Commonwealth Games record of 22.02 seconds, which Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah had set at Birmingham 2022.
As one of the event's top seeds, Hodge bypassed the opening heats and moved straight into the semifinals, where she quickly established herself as the favourite.
The 2026 season has been exceptional for Hodge. She claimed the NCAA outdoor 200-metre title in 21.68 seconds earlier this year and finished runner-up to Olympic champion Julien Alfred at the Monaco Diamond League.
Hodge's gold extends the British Virgin Islands' success at the Commonwealth Games. Kyron McMaster won the men's 400-metre hurdles at Gold Coast 2018 and retained the title at Birmingham 2022.
