Guyana police launched a search in a bushy area near Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, on Monday night after receiving conflicting accounts from the father of a newborn about the location of the child's remains.
The investigation began when a relative alerted police to concerns over the infant's whereabouts. The mother, aged 39 and living in Non Pareil on the East Coast, delivered at home on October 8 and was transported by ambulance to Enmore Regional Hospital. Medical staff informed her the newborn had died.
During questioning, the mother stated she was denied the opportunity to view her child. A doctor subsequently gave the father a box containing the remains. Following her release from hospital, the father claimed to have buried the infant in their backyard, directing the mother to a spot marked by a tyre.
When the mother sought clarification, she told police the father threatened her with violence if she disclosed the burial to her mother or sisters. Officers excavated the indicated location to a depth exceeding four feet but recovered nothing.
The father then provided investigators with a revised version of events. He explained that a female doctor at the hospital had shown compassion and permitted him to take the remains for burial after he signed paperwork. He stated he transported the newborn to Little Diamond and deposited it in a bushy area adjacent to a trench. Police accompanied him to the site and initiated a search.
As of October 14, it remained uncertain whether the remains had been located. Authorities are also examining the alleged threat directed at the mother. No charges have been filed in connection with the matter.
