Two armed men opened fire inside a Charlotte Amalie jewelry store on Saturday in a failed robbery attempt, sending shoppers and merchants scrambling for cover, police said.

The suspects entered VI Gold Corner on the waterfront around the time of the incident dressed in white long-sleeved shirts and discharged their weapons inside the store, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department. A male victim took cover at the rear of the shop while a female victim dropped to the floor as bullets flew. Despite the gunfire, no injuries were reported.

The two men fled the scene on a motor scooter without taking anything, police said. Investigators are seeking anyone who saw two men riding a motor scooter in the waterfront area around the time of the shooting.

Hours earlier the same day, thieves struck a second location across town. Three individuals dressed entirely in black with covered faces broke into the Haugland Lay Down Yard in Sarah Hill at approximately 1:17 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The group breached storage containers and stole assorted spools of copper wire valued at roughly $8,500, according to the police report. The suspects carried the stolen metal away on foot through the same entry point and disappeared into the surrounding area.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is handling both cases. Police urged anyone with information to contact CIB at (340) 774-2211, extensions 5553 through 5556, or call 911 in emergencies. Crime Stoppers USVI also accepts anonymous tips at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
