The Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) is staging a full week of celebrations honouring educators, with activities spanning from late September into the first week of October.
The observance began over the weekend of September 26 and 27, when special prayers took place in religious institutions across Dominica, DAT Public Relations Officer Juanita Carbon said.
On September 28, DAT members fanned out to Portsmouth and nearby areas for "DAT in the Street," inviting residents to describe the impact teachers have had on them. The following day will see a social media push celebrating educators from throughout the island.
Wellness takes centre stage on September 30. Working alongside the Ministry of Health, the organisation is arranging health screenings and wellness checks at medical facilities island-wide. The day will also include "Relax and Unwind" sessions aimed at boosting physical, mental and emotional health, ending with karaoke nights at The Launch in Picard and Cozy Corner at The Realm.
On October 1, Teachers' Appreciation Day invites students, parents and the public to honour educators. Recreational offerings that day include Sip and Paint, Sip and Dip, and a bonfire gathering.
Teachers' Day proper falls on October 2, opening with a Thanksgiving and Recognition Service at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Newtown. The day concludes with "Sunset Bliss," a cocktail event at Plantation House in Castle Comfort.
The calendar wraps up on October 5, World Teachers' Day, when President Sylvanie Burton will deliver a radio address. The DAT National Executive and Youth Arm has called on teachers and the public to join the week's events.
