As Dominica enters its 45th year of independence, three community organisations are launching Creole Snack Day to tackle what they describe as a troubling decline in the nation's health linked to dietary choices.
Green Life Wellness, Ora Arani Healing Space, and Creole Heartbeat have joined forces to stage the event on Friday, October 10th between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The organisers say young people's reliance on imported commercial snacks loaded with salt, sugar, fats, and additives has fuelled rising rates of obesity, ADHD, respiratory conditions, hormone imbalances, and tooth decay.
The programme will feature motivational speakers, samples of nutritious snacks, a trivia game, jingle performances, and a recipe guide for families to take home. Organisers framed it as both educational and enjoyable for students and parents.
They are positioning locally produced foods and natural snacks as healthier alternatives, stressing both their nutritional benefits and cultural roots. The group is calling on parents to take greater responsibility for monitoring what their children consume and to embrace the shift toward better eating during Creole Month.
"Let us all pause for the cause," the organising group said, "and make this Creole Month not just a celebration of culture, but a celebration of health and life."
