The Ministry of Health and Social Development will stage the BVI Wellness Fest on Saturday, November 7 at Queen Elizabeth II Park, running from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The gathering will feature physical activities, cooking demonstrations centred on nutrition, health screenings, mental wellness support and family entertainment. It sits within the broader BVI Moves initiative, designed to help residents take charge of their own wellbeing.
Health Minister Vincent Wheatley framed the event as a shift in how people view their bodies and disease. "Too often, we begin thinking seriously about our health when something goes wrong. Wellness asks us to think differently. It encourages us to make choices today that can help protect our health tomorrow," Wheatley said.
Diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and certain cancers remain widespread across the territory. While some risk factors lie beyond individual control, lifestyle changes, regular checks and prompt treatment can reduce their impact.
Wheatley stressed that better health does not demand drastic overhauls. "Wellness can begin with one small decision. It may be taking a walk after work, drinking more water, adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals, getting your blood pressure checked or simply making time to rest," he said.
The Ministry aims to move beyond a standard health fair model. Wheatley said the event will "create an interactive environment where residents can move, learn, connect, ask questions and discover practical approaches to wellness that fit their lives." Individuals, families, workplaces and community groups are invited to participate.
