The BVI's Junior Minister for Financial Services Lorna Smith has indicated that India represents a significant opportunity for the territory's financial sector, drawing comparisons to the territory's successful penetration of the Chinese market three decades ago.

In an interview on the Talking Points radio programme, Smith characterised a recent delegation visit as highly successful. She pointed to a 1990 mission to China that brought together the late Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt and business leaders as a model for the current India strategy. That early foothold in China has since yielded substantial returns: the country now represents 44% of the BVI's financial services revenue.

Smith outlined concrete targets for India expansion. The territory aims to secure 1% of India-related foreign direct investment activity within five years, with aspirations to reach 5% over roughly 15 years. She highlighted Gujarat's GIFT City, an emerging financial centre, as a priority area for partnership. The government is working toward a memorandum of understanding with GIFT City, contingent on approval from authorities in India and Britain.

The recent delegation comprised 14 firms, several of which have already committed to returning to India regularly. Smith attributed the opportunity to India's expanding economy and the international ambitions of its businesses across textiles, manufacturing and technology sectors. "Businesses are growing, textiles, manufacturing, technology is big. And they want to go global. BVI is global already," she said.

While Smith acknowledged that developing the Indian market would require sustained effort, she remained optimistic about its prospects for the territory's long-term growth.
