The Government of the Virgin Islands is recruiting a successor to Jeremiah Frett, who is leaving his post as Financial Secretary. The vacancy notice, posted in early October, specifies a salary of $126,373 per year, supplemented by entertainment and telecommunications allowances, a government vehicle, and contractual gratuity.
Frett has held the role since January 2021, when he began in an acting capacity. His appointment was formally ratified in August 2022, effective from July 11, 2022. He replaces Glenroy Forbes in the position.
Over nearly three decades in public service, Frett joined the civil service in 1997 and worked across multiple agencies. His earlier roles included Accounts Manager and Finance and Planning Officer within the Office of the Deputy Governor, followed by postings as Policy Analyst and Budget Coordinator at the Ministry of Finance. He earned a Master's degree in Finance from Glasgow Caledonian University and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Shepherd College.
Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley recently acknowledged Frett's contributions, noting that the Ministry under his stewardship delivered the Territory's largest budget on record and secured the BVI's inaugural investment-grade credit rating. The Financial Secretary oversees budget preparation, financial administration, revenue collection, debt management and economic strategy.
Speculation about Frett's plans surfaced weeks before the official announcement. In August, he confirmed that retirement discussions were underway but stopped short of confirming a final decision. By September, media reports suggested he intended to step down by year's end, though the government had not yet made any public statement.
Prospective candidates must submit applications by November 2, 2026. The incoming Financial Secretary will assume control of a critical portfolio as the Territory navigates questions about spending, revenue, investment and fiscal direction.
