The BVI government is weighing whether to introduce price controls as a response to escalating expenses across essential goods and services, according to a junior minister.

Lorna Smith, Junior Minister of Trade and Economic Development, raised the possibility during an appearance on the Talking Points radio programme. She noted that the Consumer Protection Act was recently amended and activated, but currently lacks the regulations needed to put price controls into effect.

"We may have to introduce price controls," Smith said, emphasizing that the government is considering flexible approaches rather than setting a single fixed price for items.

Smith cited St Maarten as an example of an alternative model. Rather than mandating one price, authorities there establish a price band: "In St. Martin, for example, they don't say the cost of an orange should be a dollar. They would tell you that you can charge between 86 cents and a dollar for the orange but you can't go above a dollar," she explained.

The government's interest in price regulation reflects widespread complaints from residents about the burden of high grocery bills, electricity charges, housing costs and insurance fees on household finances.

Smith identified rental expenses as a growing problem. She linked rising insurance premiums to the territory's hurricane risk and noted that higher premiums have contributed to increased rents. The government is in contact with the Financial Services Commission, which oversees insurance companies, to explore potential solutions. Smith suggested that government participation in catastrophe insurance could offer some relief, though she did not outline any formal plan.

Smith made clear that no price control framework has been finalised, only that any such measures would be developed through regulations under the Consumer Protection Act.
