The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has ramped up targeted patrols across Tortola following a recent surge in armed robberies targeting business establishments.
At least two businesses were hit by armed robbers over the weekend, with reports indicating that victims were physically assaulted during one of the incidents. The force said it is actively investigating the robberies and has developed information that is guiding multiple lines of inquiry.
Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool said in a statement on October 12 that the use of firearms to threaten and intimidate residents is unacceptable. "No business owner, employee, or member of the public should have to live or work under the threat of armed violence," she said.
Vanterpool acknowledged the impact the incidents have had on public confidence and community safety, and said the force is treating the matters with seriousness. While specific details of the investigations cannot be disclosed at this stage, police said they remain committed to arresting those responsible and bringing them before the courts.
The force is urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity to come forward. Vanterpool said even small pieces of information may be critical to the investigations. Victims have been offered support as they navigate the traumatic encounters, police said.
